Olivia Thrives in her first 5k

Olivia crossing the finish line.

One year ago today, I ran my first 5k, the 2010 Weaverville Firecracker 5k, and survived.  Today I ran with Olivia in her first 5k, the 2011 Weaverville Firecracker 5k, and she thrived.  Olivia was one of two seven year olds in a field of over 300 and finished in just over 36 minutes, less than a 12-minute mile.  Her only previous experience was a one-mile fun run a few weeks ago, and she ran today on limited sleep, having stayed up late to watch the fireworks in Asheville last night.

We both had a great time.  She is ready to run the Citizen-Times 5k in the fall, and has set her sights on the Thomas Wolfe 8k.  Now William wants to get in on the act too.

The post-race festivities include having some of the grandparents over for heretical hamburgers.

I was just behind her.
